Out West Trip 2010. Destination: Kansas!
After a fun trip out to Kansas, and the determination that we could, in fact, drive long distances with the babies in the van, we prepared for the trip out to visit the Lahodas in NJ. So on Wednesday, July 21, we set out to Pittsburgh to visit Rob’s family who live there. We got to see Annie’s son Eamonn who is about 7 months older than the twins. We also got to see Henry who is only about a month older than the twins. Last year when we went, Henry was only a few days old so it was pretty amazing to see how much bigger he was! We spent a fun evening with everyone and got some really cute pictures of all the babies together. It’s really cool to see how each of them is different but how many similarities there were. RJ and Eamonn especially looked a lot alike!
After staying the night we continued on to NJ. When we arrived in Pittsburgh we were surprised to find that Evie had managed to leak out of her diaper in a very major way. Kristy had noticed something on her hand before we left but we didn’t think anything of it. So when we got to Uncle Ed’s house everyone got to spend the first half hour cleaning Evie and the car seat out. So when we got on the road to NJ we were very aware of trying to avoid another poop incident. So when they started getting really fussy in the middle of Pennsylvania we decided to pull off the highway and feed them and change them. Later they started napping right when we were both very very hungry so we stopped and Rob tried to leave the van as quietly as possible. A little later we got stuck in a lot of traffic so Kristy climbed back to between the babies and sat on our cooler while she fed them in their seats. It worked out great because by the time she was done and back up front the traffic opened up and we just stopped for a quick diaper change before the last leg to NJ.
Once we got to NJ we unloaded the babies into the waiting arms of Granmom and Grandpops Lahoda. Once we got the playard set up in the family room, the babies were able to stretch out and have some fun while we got some pizza for dinner. Of course the babies got to enjoy some food with us at the dining room table, just not any pizza!
On Friday morning we took our time getting up and everything. We fed the babies and spent some time just hanging out at the house. Jon came down Thursday evening and again Friday. Friday afternoon we left the babies with Granmom and Grandpops while Rob, Kristy and Jon went into NYC for the afternoon. We took the train in from Edison and ended up in Penn Station before hopping on a subway down to Greenwich Village. We walked from the subway through the streets before stopping and getting some food from a bakery. Kristy and Jon got monster sized cookies while Rob got an eclair. We sat in Washington Square Park for a little before heading over to Little Italy to visit Lombardi’s Pizza, the first pizzeria in the USA! It was really good pizza, but the place felt a little touristy. Obviously they knew they had a hook for people so they were going to use it. After dinner we went up to see the Flatiron building and took a bunch of pictures before heading back to Penn Station and home.
When we got back we heard about Granmom and Grandpops’ fun afternoon with the babies. They got to go for a walk, but it was too hot out so they didn’t walk long. So they spent the afternoon playing and eating at home. Of course everyone had fun but the grandparents seemed a bit tired after everything!
Saturday morning we got up and went to visit Rob’s grandparents so they could meet the babies. It was fun to see the two of them meeting the babies and how they both got so excited. Grandma Lahoda was in a wheelchair after her stroke, but she was still really happy to see the twins. Grandpa Lahoda kept smiling, more than we’d ever seen before, and was obviously really happy to see them both. He kept playing with them and holding them. We got a bunch of really cute pictures with both of them and the twins.
That afternoon we decided to take the babies swimming in a kiddie pool Granmom and Grandpops had set up in the back yard. It was really hot out but the babies had a lot of fun. RJ especially seemed really comfortable in the water and was crawling around in it and splashing it. Evie seemed less excited but she seemed to have fun anyway. Kristy and Granmom got in the water with the babies.
After the pool time and another meal we sat and relaxed a bit together. Everyone had fun feeding the babies and playing with them before we sent them off to bed.
Sunday we decided to skip church and just spend the time together. That afternoon we had a bunch of people over to meet the babies. A lot of Granmom and Grandpops’ friends from church came along with some of Jon’s friends. Even Shaun and Ben Emerson stopped by, Rob hadn’t seen them in about 5 years! It was a lot of fun and neat to see everyone again and get to “show off” the twins a bit. After everyone left we spent the rest of the evening just hanging out and talking while taking care of the babies. That evening when we were putting them to sleep Evie managed to get herself out of her bouncy seat and start crawling towards the door before we caught her and put her in the playard. She ended up being up for another hour!
Finally, Monday morning, it was time to go back. The time had flown by like it always does but we had a lot of fun seeing everyone and being back in NJ. Next year we’re hoping to be able to bring the babies to the Shore! Driving back we figured out a good system for keeping the babies happy. Rob put the jumpseat in place between the babies’ seats so Kristy was able to climb back and sit between them (with a seatbelt!) and feed them so when we stopped all we’d have to do was change diapers and they’d be ready to go! We actually made it home in only a little longer than we had taken before the babies were born!
